Black Uhuru is a Jamaican reggae group that was initially formed in 1972 under the name **Uhuru**, which means “freedom” in Swahili. Over the years, the group has experienced several line-up changes, but Derrick “Duckie” Simpson has remained a constant presence. Their most successful period was during the 1980s, and their album **”Anthem”** even won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985.

The group’s journey began in the Waterhouse district of Kingston, Jamaica, with an initial line-up consisting of Garth Dennis, Don Carlos, and Derrick “Duckie” Simpson. After some early releases that didn’t gain much traction, they reformed as **Black Sounds Uhuru**, working with producer Prince Jammy on their debut album **”Love Crisis”** in 1977. The group continued to evolve, and with the addition of Sandra “Puma” Jones as a member, they adopted the name Black Uhuru.

Their collaboration with renowned rhythm section Sly and Robbie led to a string of successful singles, including “General Penitentiary,” a re-recording of Michael Rose’s solo hit “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” and “Shine Eye Gal,” featuring guest guitarist Keith Richards. The band’s second album, **”Showcase,”** drew from these singles and solidified their status with a performance at the 1980 Reggae Sunsplash festival.
