Bill Withers, an authentic American musical icon, was born on July 4, 1938, in the small coal-mining town of **Slab Fork, West Virginia**. Raised in nearby **Beckley**, in coal mining country, he was the youngest of six children. Withers’ father, a miner, passed away when he was just **13 years old**. At **17**, he enlisted in the Navy and eventually made his way to **Los Angeles** in **1967**. His self-financed demos caught the attention of **Forrest Hamilton**, who introduced him to **Clarence Avant** of Sussex Records. Avant tapped **Booker T. Jones** to produce Bill’s debut album, *Just As I Am*, which included the Grammy-winning hit “**Ain’t No Sunshine**” and the beloved “**Grandma’s Hands**.” Withers assembled members of the **Watts 103rd Street Band** for U.S. and international tours.
